In only a month's time I grt to ride on a jet plane off this rock for some well-deserved vacation! Unlike last year's vacation I'm breaking it up into two parts of about two weeks each. This half will be just for kicking back and relaxing at home, while the other half will be taken around mid-October to attend CAP National Staff College at Maxwell AFB.
While I'm eager for vacation to begin, I'm keeping it more low-key than last year. There has been some talk about moving some mission functions (including the department I work for) to Huntsville, Alabama, but like any news about the island, such news is taken with a grain of salt or a cynical 'I'll believe it when I see it!' If it does happen and they offer a decent relocation package for me to go to Huntsville, I'll be taking the company up on their offer.
The Coasties from the buoy tender Sequoia made a brief stop here on Kwajalein last week, and Saturday night the guys made a significant dent in the Vets' Hall beer supply. Our next shipment is expected sometime in one of the March barges. Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day are two very popular events on island; expect both the Snake Pit and Vets' Hall to be open. Food sales are slow, though occasionally I'll experiment with a couple of new bar food items other than the usual breakfast burrito, BLTs, fried egg and grilled cheese sandwiches. If it wasn't for Surfway being so expensive and supply being iffy, I'd offer these specials more often for variety. The Coasties brought a couple of cases of appetizer kabobs (chicken and beef/lamb) from their galley and put them out on the grill outside, basting them with spicy Korean kochoojang barbeque sauce, which gave them a flavor that was out of this world. Now to find out if the kabobs are available in our supply system; if they do, then I'll propose to the Vets' Hall ops manager if we can swing it. I'll probably have to cook 'em up early and serve them in a way that can be sold and maintain a profit for the hall.
