Hau'oli makahiki hou 2011!

For the linguistically-challenged, that's 'Happy New Year' in Hawaiian.

New year, new challenges... after a three day holiday weekend, back to the work grind!

New Year's Eve was not as crazy as previous years at Vets' Hall, though I was busy cooking up 'supper for the drunk and wasted' back in the kitchen with a couple of fellow Legion members. Just your typical bar food - breakfast burritos, burgers, fried egg and cheese sandwiches. This year there were several competing events on the island that cut down on attendance at the hall: fun run at Emon beach, bingo at the Pacific Club and the Snake Pit, not to mention other private parties at the boat shacks and in people's homes. We did have bus service between downtown and the hall, but the bus croaked towards the end of the evening. I stayed relatively sober during the evening - my job wasn't done until the kitchen was cleaned up.

New Year's Day was pretty quiet... the party animals were nursing their hangovers and I pretty much stayed in my room. I went to the Snake Pit later and had a few cold ones, as Vets' Hall was closed.

Sunday night was karaoke night at the Pit... proof positive that some should never sing, drunk or sober!

It's an unwritten tradition that we celebrate birthdays twice on Kwajalein. Since we're on the other side of the international date line, we celebrate out 'Kwaj birthday' first, followed by the CONUS (CONtinental United States) birthday the following day.

Tuesday morning brought the familiar roar of the ATI DC-8 as it landed on Runway 06, hopefully with mail and produce! Gonna be packed at the parcel pickup window at the post office this afternoon!
