"Trick or treat, smell yer feet, gimme something good to eat!" Go away crumb-crushers... this here Halloween party is for the adults on the island!
Our annual Halloween party was a roaring success! Over the course of last week the Vets' Hall bar and social hall areas were transformed into a haunted house. The party was very well attended - I'm guessing over 100 were milling in and around the bar and social area at the height of the party around 10:00 pm.
Costumes ranged from the very simple to the very complex. One of my co-workers dressed up as a zombie with such realistic makeup you could hardly tell it was her... besides, she was in 'character' most of the night. She had us doing double-takes until we found out it was her. I kept my Halloween costume simple - dressed up as an 'airline captain', with non-specific 'airline' wings and captain's shoulder marks. I was pissed that my captain's hat - complete with 'scrambled eggs' on the visor - didn't make in the mail on time (it's probably somewhere in the Kwaj post office just waiting to be stuck in my mailbox - packages get mis-pitched regularly there).
Of course, many were getting hammered as the evening wore on, including myself. Vets' Hall arranged for shuttle bus service between the hall and the BQ and family housing area, and that was a good idea (it's also USAKA policy for all major parties to include a cart or bus service to transport people back home, especially if they're wasted.) I brought my bike down to the hall, but decided to play it safe and took the bus home. I picked up my bike at the hall the following day. Even a stiff evening rain shower didn't deter the party animals from enjoying a good time.
Next up is Veterans' Day and Thanksgiving, followed by Christmas and New Year.
POSTSCRIPT: My captain's cap finally arrived - two weeks after Halloween. In the military's postal service's infinite wisdom, the package took a long detour via Diego Garcia before being re-routed back to Kwajalein.
