After a little over five months of healing, fitting and carefully watching what I ate, I received my dentures on Saturday. They fit well and probably will need a little tweaking (which will be done Tuesday at the dental hobby shop) but overall I've had no problems. Of course, I have to 'retrain' my mouth to speak with teeth again; for the next few weeks I may be slurring my words, so those of you on island that know me please don't think I'm hitting the bottle on a daily basis! It does feel good to smile again, and I'm not one who smiles much.
Bills paid, bought my airport transfer in Honolulu - with lei greeting (hey, I'm playing tourist before going back to work!) included. I may rent a car for a day or so to go places the tour buses won't go, such as shopping at the Hickam BX (a privilege extended to civilian contractors woking for the military overseas, along with commissary and AFRC - Armed Forces Recreation Centers - resorts) and a few other recommended grindz joints (restaurants, in Hawaiian pidgin) not on the Waikiki trolley routes. The high cost of gas and lack of available parking in Hawaii doesn't make it really feasible to rent a car. I've already heard about how bad the traffic is on the freeways there during the work week.
Going home to Vegas in the height of summer is not gonna be a comfortable one - days with high temperatures of well over 100 degrees are common, and it doesn't cool off to about the high 70s-low 80s until very late into the night or early in the morning. I'm already accustomed to it - I used to live there about 20 years ago.
