Just a few hours left before pau hana and the weekend. Couple of hours volunteer work at the library, then slide down the stairs to the bowling alley for the 3-6-9 no-tap bowling tournament. (For those who don't bowl, a 3-6-9 no-tap works like this: automatic strike awarded on the third, sixth and ninth frame; if on the first roll you leave one pin standing, it counts as a strike as well.). And then - if I'm not too tired - I'll swing by Vets' Hall and throw down a few beers.
Yesterday at the American Legion post meeting I was nominated to be the Post Service Officer for 2010-2011. The PSO is there to help veterans navigate through the bureaucratic labyrinth of paperwork required for veterans to process their benefits or disability claims. Within our post I was told I would have the additional duty to welcome transient aircrew RON (remaining overnight) in Kwaj and open up Vets' Hall for a cold beer or two if they happen to land on a night the hall is not normally open - if they elect to do so. Elections are next month and I'm looking forward to serving.
Booked my hotel in Honolulu for the three days and four nights I'll be staying when I return to Kwaj from home leave in August. Don't need a fancy hotel with a beachfront view; I see plenty of it every day when I leave the Sands BQ to go to work - it's only about 50 yards to oceanside. It's close by the Ala Moana mall and a short trolley or bus ride to Waikiki proper. I'm staying at the The Equus Hotel and Marina Tower, near the Ala Wai boat harbor, and not far from the Ilikai Hotel - for Hawaii Five-O fans, it's where Jack Lord is introduced in the opening credits at the hotel's penthouse balcony. (There is a bronze bust of the late Jack Lord outside Kahala Mall in Honolulu.)
Considering the high price of gasoline on O'ahu I'm going to probably rely on 'Frank Fasi's Limo Service' (aka The Bus - nicknamed after the late Honolulu mayor who introduced it) for most of my sojourns in and around Waikiki and the neighboring area, probably renting a car for a day or two if I want to travel out to the North Shore. But if a tour has transportation, I'll probably take it.
