Eight months in Kwaj...

... and loving every minute of it!

It's hard to believe that a little over a year ago I was absolutely miserable in my previous job. Suffice it to say that I put up with nearly two and a half years being abused, bullied, belittled and micromanaged on a daily basis, topped off with condescenscion from the management. It was not unusual for me to work 10 hour days - sometimes 12 - and the stress level was such that it was aggravating my diabetes and causing me to lose teeth (I eventually had to get dentures.) Eventually the situation came to a head and I pulled a seriously risky career move, considering the economy is in the shitter and jobs are hard to come by: I turned in my keys, access badge, wrote a brief, scathing resignation note (the sonofabitch was already gone for the day when I dropped it on his desk!) and walked out the door, never to return.

Since I voluntarily resigned, I couldn't get unemployment benefits (and even if they'd fired me, the company I worked for would have probably fought to keep me from getting any), so I lived off an early withdrawal from my 401k until I got the job in Kwajalein.

Fast forward a year later: my stress level is way down, I really love my job and I am enjoying life in paradise - smack dab in the middle of Bumfuck, Nowhere. Sure, I've put up with the occasional bout of homesickness, but that was promptly cured by getting to know the many people living and working on Kwaj. I'm looking forward to home leave in July, but that's only for six weeks before I get back to Kwajalein.

  1. Good to hear of your life's turn around, it's amazing the light at the end of the tunnel isn't another train after all, just the end of the tunnel, confinement, and darkness.

Well, I won't be seeing you anytime soon, after a couple of phone calls, applications, emails, the post I was attempting to fill, has been taken, I'll keep trying KRS to see if anything else I may qualify for crops up. In the meantime, I hope to work you when you get your General ticket on 20M. Keep the posts coming in, they are a treat to read!

  2. Just because you quit your job does not mean you cannot claim unemployment. I quit my job once and claimed unemployment, the company was floored I would even consider it. They fought it and lost in court.

It's called, "Changing the terms of the employment". You agree to work 8 - 5 and they want you to work 8-8...terms change...you quit...you get unemployment. You are a salary employee and they change you to hourly....terms change...you quit...you get unemployment.

  3. Wasn't worth fighting it... ir would have been a 'he-said, she said' pissing contest. The less I had to deal with my former company the better.
