Not surprisingly, we have a sizable group of 'Parrotheads' (fans of the music of and lifestyle promoted by Jimmy Buffett). So, on Sunday night (April 11th) Camp Hamilton Beach was transformed into Parrothead Central here on Kwaj. Plenty of margaritas, daiquiris, cheeseburgers in paradise and lots of cold Landshark lager beer, with lots of Jimmy Buffett and other tropical music. Some of us (including myself) took a dip in the placid waters of Kwajalein lagoon, watching the sunset and wasting away the day in Kwajaritaville. Plenty of beach games (with team names that were downright raunchy and debauched... you get the meaning ;)) such as coconut toss, beach bowling, hermit crab races helped pass the time with good friends.
Party ended sometime around midnight for me, and I was treated to the scariest bike ride of my life. I'd forgotten my bike light. South of Vets' Hall there are no street lights at night (for safety purposes so landing pilots don't line up on Lagoon Road instead of the runway; while it's rare we do get an occasional military flight in at night for a 'gas-and-go' refuel). Discretion being the better part of valor, I walked my bike on the dirt trails until I reached the paved Lagoon Road, then hopped on my bike once I got to a well- lit spot. Lesson learned: never again. (And didn't get busted by Kwaj Five-O for not having a bike light on me south of 9th Street after dark. More importantly, I didn't fall off my bike...)
Mail fairy was good to me Monday. The monthly C-17 flights on the second Saturday usually brings lots of packages, and I received five of them from orders I put in about two to three weeks earlier.
